Johnson County Traffic Court Records
Traffic cases here split into two tracks. State-law matters can travel through General Sessions or another county court path. Which path applies depends on the charge and procedure. Mountain City ordinance cases stay with Mountain City Municipal Court. The court name on the ticket tells you the track. So do the issuing agency and the alleged violation.
What lands in the docket? Citations, summonses, appearances, and continuances all count as court events. Pleas, judgments, fines, costs, payments, and dispositions count too. A police citation database is not the same thing as the court's filed case register. After filing, the official record rests with the court clerk.
Johnson County Traffic Court Routes
Read the citation before you search anything. It names Mountain City or a city ordinance? Contact the municipal clerk. It points to General Sessions or a county case? Use the Johnson County Online Court Records form through the Circuit Court Clerk's office. One caution: do not choose a court based only on where the stop happened.
County routeState-law matters handled through the proper Johnson County court and clerk.
Municipal routeMountain City ordinance matters kept by the town's municipal court clerk.
According to the Tennessee judiciary, municipal courts hear city ordinance violations, and traffic rules often fall in that bucket. Exact local jurisdiction still turns on the ordinance and the citation itself. When the court name is unclear, give both clerks the citation number, date, and issuing agency so the record gets routed correctly.
Looking Up a Traffic Ticket
The official Johnson pages offer no dedicated traffic search or pay screen. Still, the county portal can locate some matters by name and case details. Work every channel. A blank portal result never ends the docket search.
- Read the citation for the court, citation number, appearance date, and issuing agency.
- For a county matter, open the Johnson County case search and enter the full party name.
- Select General Sessions and Criminal when those labels fit the citation, then add the original case year if known.
- Complete the Turnstile check and review results for the matching case reference.
- Call the Circuit Court Clerk at 423-727-9012 or visit the counter if the matter does not appear.
- For a Mountain City ordinance case, call Town Hall at 423-727-8005 or ask the municipal court clerk.
Bring the paper citation to the counter in person. It may differ from the later court number. An attorney, if one is involved, can also supply the current setting and response procedure. One more note applies here. Tennessee Public Case History covers appeals, not routine trial traffic cases.
Johnson County Traffic Search Fields
The county form has no Traffic checkbox, citation-number field, violation menu, or pay-by-citation tool. Its controls serve the broader court index instead. Stick to the fields the official interface actually supports.
| Field | Use for a Traffic Search | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Party Name | Enter the full cited person's name | May also accept a case reference |
| Case Year | Use the original filing year | Not an appearance-date search |
| Case Number | Use a final numeric suffix when the portal format fits | A citation number may differ |
| Court Type | Try General Sessions when appropriate | No Municipal Court option |
| Case Type | Try Criminal when appropriate | No Traffic option |
| Turnstile | Pass the challenge to enable search | Failure is not a no-record result |
Date, judge, courtroom, attorney, status, and violation filters are missing too. When your known facts do not fit these fields, ask the clerk. That happens often with only a citation number in hand.
How to Find Your Traffic Court Date
The citation should list an appearance date and time. Confirm it with the named court anyway. A continuance, reset, payment instruction, or court order can change the schedule later. The Johnson portal cannot search settings by date, so treat the last docket event as history, not as your next hearing.
| Citation Number | Use the exact printed identifier, such as citation number on ticket; no Johnson format was published. |
|---|---|
| Case Number | The court-assigned identifier, which may differ from the citation number. |
| Court | General Sessions, another county court, or Mountain City Municipal Court as printed. |
| Date & Time | The current appearance setting, confirmed with the clerk. |
| Location | The courtroom or municipal location stated by the court. |
| Status | Any filed continuance, disposition, or other event affecting appearance. |
When you call, have the name, citation, date, issuing agency, and printed appearance date ready. For county settings, Melissa Hollaway's office can confirm the record. Mountain City municipal settings go through the town clerk.
Johnson County Municipal Traffic Cases
The official University of Tennessee MTAS municipal-court material explains how Tennessee municipal citations and court procedure work.
That page gives statewide municipal-court context. Mountain City's citation and its own clerk still govern the local procedure. They control the court appearance and case procedure too. MTAS lists Michelle Stewart as Mountain City's municipal court clerk. It also names William Cockett as municipal judge. Town Hall sits at 210 S Church Street, Mountain City, TN 37683. Published hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The town phone is 423-727-8005.
Pay or Contest a Ticket
Johnson County posts no online traffic-payment button on its official pages. Mountain City has no citation portal either. No complete current local fee schedule appears. So check the citation. Call the court before the appearance date. Ask whether a response is accepted online, by mail, or at the counter. Also ask what action payment records in that particular court.
| Paying the Ticket | Contesting the Ticket |
|---|---|
| Ask the clerk how payment affects the plea and disposition. | Ask how to enter the response and obtain a hearing setting. |
| Confirm the exact total and deadline. | Confirm the appearance date, time, and place. |
| Use only payment channels named by the issuing court. | File or appear through the method that court requires. |
| Keep the court receipt and case number. | Keep notices, filings, and any reset order. |
Do not ignore the appearance date. MTAS notes that failure to appear can have contempt consequences in municipal procedure.
Call the issuing court promptly if the date passed or a payment did not post.
A clerk can share procedural facts but cannot choose your response for you. For advice on pleas, defenses, or consequences, talk to a licensed Tennessee attorney.
Johnson County Citation and Case Numbers
A citation number starts with the ticket an officer hands you. A case number comes later. It gets assigned by the court's own filing system. The two may not match. The Johnson search help shows the format 99GS1-2023-CR-12345. For that style, enter only 12345 in Case Number.
That numeric-suffix rule does not fit every printed citation. If yours looks nothing like the example, search by full name and year instead. Then check the result Filter. Look for a visible reference, or call the court with both identifiers.
Traffic Court Record vs Driving Record
A traffic court record and a driving record are two different files. Different offices keep them. The court docket tracks the citation case itself. It runs from the filed ticket through the plea, the judgment, and any payment posted along the way. The state keeps the driving record outside the court entirely.
| Court Traffic Record | State Driving Record | |
|---|---|---|
| Custodian | Issuing court's clerk | Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security |
| Shows | Citation case events, settings, plea, judgment, costs, and disposition | State-maintained driver history |
| Access | County portal, clerk phone, counter, mail, or court copy request | Separate state request channel |
| Best identifier | Citation or court case number | Identifiers required by the state custodian |
Neither file answers for the other. A blank court result leaves the state file untouched, and the state file is no substitute for a certified court judgment. Get the record from the office that actually holds it.
Johnson County Traffic Docket Terms
Traffic docket entries mark steps in a case. They do not always show the final result. The citation or summons opens the matter, the appearance is the deadline to respond, and a plea states the answer. A continuance pushes a hearing to a new date, while a judgment or closing entry records what the court did.
CitationThe written notice of the alleged violation.
AppearanceThe date or response event the court names.
ContinuanceA move of the setting to a later date, not a dismissal.
DispositionThe recorded result or closing event in the court case.
A payment entry only shows money posted to the case. It does not spell out every term of the judgment. When the exact result matters, ask for the docket and the filed order together.
Copies and Fees
Ask the court that entered the case for a copy of the traffic record. Have the citation or case number ready. Also bring the cited name, issuing agency, rough date, and the event or judgment you need. Say whether you want a plain copy or a certified one. Johnson County does not publish a full current fee schedule for traffic copies.
| Item | Published Johnson Fee | What to Ask |
|---|---|---|
| Plain copy | Not published | Per-page charge, format, and delivery |
| Certified judgment | Not published | Certification or seal charge |
| Record search | Not published | Search fee, if any, and needed identifiers |
| Traffic case balance | Case-specific | Current fine, costs, payment methods, and receipt |
Do not treat statewide fee examples as the local total. Call the county clerk at 423-727-9012, or Mountain City at 423-727-8005, depending on which court issued the ticket. For mail requests, use the address that office confirms.
Missing Johnson County Traffic Tickets
A no-result message is not a dismissal. The case may simply not be indexed yet. It may sit under an older reference, or in Mountain City municipal court, or behind the wrong court and case filters. A blocked verification step can also stop the search before any case query runs.
Search again with the full name and the original year. Try the General Sessions and Criminal combination only if it fits the ticket. Then call the issuing court with the paper citation in hand. Ask whether the case is filed. Ask whether a court number was assigned, and whether the appearance date still stands.
Confirm Johnson County Traffic Tickets
A short checklist helps either clerk find the right matter. Give the cited person's name, the citation number, and the court case number if you have one. Add the citation date, the issuing agency, and the printed appearance date. Then ask for the current setting. Ask about the case status, the total due, and the ways you can respond.
- Name exactly as printed
- Citation and court case numbers
- Issuing agency
- Citation and appearance dates
- County or municipal court name
- Needed docket or certified copy
Write down which office you called and when. For more detail on county settings, the Johnson County Court Dates page explains the clerk-held schedule and the limits of searching dates online.
